Schaaf Window Company began in June of 1959 as Schaaf Glass Company started by Fred Schaaf and his son George Sr. The operation began on the southwest side of Chicago then moved shortly there after to Evergreen Park. The father-son team began as a union glazing contractor for residential construction. At the time, windows were shipped either to the jobsite or to glass/lumber yard unglazed, and then glazed at those locations by glaziers.
In the mid 1960's, window manufacturers began to make pre-glazed window units. Still, Schaaf Glass was contracted by Pella Windows to glaze special projects on jobsites in the south suburbs of Chicago. Schaaf Glass continued to serve the residential contractor by installing mirrors, shower doors and supplying patio doors.
In 1972, George Sr moved Schaaf Glass to a new building in Bridgeview. He then added - new to the market - steel entry doors for the residential builders. With the success of the steel and patio doors, customers were looking for a better supplier of windows. Schaaf Glass then added windows from Northern Sash and Door (now a part of JELD-WEN) out of Hawkins, Wisconsin to supply windows for the south suburbs of Chicago.
As the window sector of the business grew, the company demanded a larger facility. The residential sector of Schaaf Glass moved to another location in Bridgeview and changed its name to Schaaf Window Company. With steady growth through the 80's and 90's, Schaaf Window continued to add related products for its customers. This included millwork and interior doors.
In 2003 Schaaf Window Company moved to its current location in Tinley Park. The building has 91,000 sq ft featuring a 4,000 sq ft showroom for the customers to see the actual products and make their selections. In February of 2009 Schaaf Window acquired the assets and services of Oakley Millwork, featuring the millwork prefinishing capabilities that they brought to the market. In June of 2009 Schaaf Window acquired the assets of Chicago Millwork and their custom millwork capabilities that are unrivaled in the Chicagoland area.
Steady growth through the 90's and early 00's has made Schaaf Window the largest independent window company in Illinois, serving the Chicagoland area from southern Wisconsin to Kankakee and from DeKalb to southwest Michigan.
In January of 2018, Schaaf Window acquired Area Glass Co. of St. John, Indiana. This has allowed us to better serve our customers in Northwest Indiana as well as offer a large set of additional products to the customers of Area Glass.
